There was a time when the standard for modern commercial roofing systems was built-up roofing (BUR). It was used by the world’s best builders, but BUR roofing systems were heavy, complex, difficult to repair and susceptible to extreme temperatures. In flat roof construction, a small group of innovative flat-roof pioneers in Europe developed polymer modified bitumen as the new gold standard.
One of those early pioneers was Marco Danese, born in 1940 in Italy. After studying economics at the University of Bologna, Marco joined his father’s rockwool insulation business. Marco solved manufacturing limitations by inventing a rewinder to produce continuous rolls — a breakthrough that changed flat roof installation forever.
In 1961, Marco founded Nord Bitumi in Verona, Italy, to manufacture bituminous polymer membranes. Nord Bitumi expanded rapidly into six plants in three countries before Marco relocated and U.S. operations commenced.
In 1981, Marco opened his first Nord Bitumi U.S. location in Plattsburgh, New York. In 1983, he opened the Macon, Georgia plant, which quickly became headquarters. In 1996, the operations were sold, and by 1998, Stefano Danese joined Marco to start General Polymers in Macon. In 2013, the name was officially changed to SD Polymers.
Always family-owned, we re-focused on closed-loop and open-loop recycling programs. Today, we divert millions of pounds of waste stream products from landfills, re-compounding raw materials for major commercial roofing roll, plastic injection-molding, and rubber compounder clients across the globe.
"To provide premium, tested, and reliable recycled polymer formulations that reduce raw material costs and optimize carbon footprint solutions, without sacrificing product performance."
By working individually with client manufacturers, we create custom formulations suited specifically for their facilities. We believe recycling plastic and rubber should actively support financial outcomes, rather than add unnecessary operational friction.
SD Polymers operates with strict adherence to local environmental regulations, offering comprehensive audit services to companies aiming to minimize production scrap waste.
Whether processing TPO membrane scraps, rubber cords, or polyester sheets, our Macon, Georgia plant re-integrates high-grade materials back into active manufacturing cycles, conserving petroleum resources and optimizing supply chains.
